Surfing & Sunsets

Playa Hermosa is one of the most consistent and best-performing surf spots in Costa Rica, with a variety of sandbars along the beach. It's ideal for intermediate to advanced surfers, so if you're a beginner, there are other waves in the area listed below. Conditions at Hermosa change rapidly depending on the tides, winds, and swells. Costa Rica also offers some of the most colorful sunsets you'll ever see!

Playa Hermosa

Description: sand bottom, rights, and lefts. One of the most consistent sandbars in Costa Rica breaks close to the beach and is a hollow and powerful wave.
Tides: Best at a mid to high tide incoming.
Direction: Best on a southwest/west swell.

Terraza

Description: A fast hollow right break in front of visible rocks, a high-performance barrel. Watch for smaller groups of rocks on the inside at lower tide.
Tides: Best from a lower to mid-tide incoming.
Direction: Best on a west/southwest swell.

Esterillos Oeste/Este

Description: A long beach with lefts and rights breaking over sand. Usually, the same size of Hermosa yet a lot more mushy and longer wave. A good alternative to the close-out of Hermosa, perfect for beginner surfers.
Tides: Best at a dead high tide incoming.
Direction: Best on a west/southwest swell.

Playa Jacó

Description: A 5 km. long beach with lefts and rights breaking over sand and small river rocks. Usually, half the size of Hermosa yet gets very peaky and fun. A good alternative to the close-out of Hermosa, perfect for beginner surfers.
Tides: Best at a dead high tide incoming.
Direction: Best on a west/southwest swell.

Playa Escondida

Description: A high-quality 'A frame' peak, right and left, with the left being longer and hollower. Breaks over a reef and has some juice although usually not too big so a short board will work but a bigger board is not recommended for the drop.
Tides: Best from a mid to high tide rising. At dead high gets mushy.
Direction: Needs a decent swell, best on a southwest/west.

Boca Barranca

Description: Extremely long left in front of a river mouth which can go for up to 500 yards. Not very hollow, ideal for longboards. Breaks over sand and small river rocks. River mouth can get dirty after rain. Protect all open cuts, and bring alcohol to clean out ears after surfing.
Tides: Best around a dead low tide incoming.
Direction: Best on a south/southwest swell.
